The Pilates Approach

This approach was first developed by Mr Joseph Pilates in the 1920’s. He was a keen exercise instructor, and during the first world war he developed a series of exercises using springs attached to hospital beds to help rehabilitate service men during the long months of immobilsation after injury.

He later migrated to the USA and continued to develop rehabilitation exercise programs aimed mainly at performers – dancers, actors and circus performers.

This medical gymnastic approach has received renewed attention in recent times as scientific research has identified the benefits of controlled exercise programs in the management of low back pain in particular.

Physiotherapy research (a large proportion of which has been conducted in Australia) has begun to offer scientific explanations why this method of exercise is effective and also to direct us towards choosing the most appropriate exercises for an individual’s needs.

In the last 10 years it has become a very important component of rehabilitation. It has been tailored to suit the needs of individuals who may have a particular movement dysfunction and lower levels of control and endurance of the stabilising muscles of the trunk and limbs.

Pilates floor and equipment programs

The Pilates program involves a variety of exercises in which stabilising muscles of the trunk and limbs are particularly emphasised. It also addresses flexibility and body awareness in order to promote smooth, flowing and controlled movement.

The program may involve either a mat or equipment based program. Equipment based programs incorporating the trapeze and reformer tables are conducted in our rehabilitation gym. A number of springs and elastic resistance devices can be added to load up the limbs and thereby increase the demand on the stabilising muscles once they have been activated. Mat (floor) exercises can be incorporated into a general gym program, or classes consisting solely of floor exercise are conducted in our Pilates studio.


Individual One On One Sessions

One on one training is required with a Physiotherapist for assessment, instruction and the implementation of a Pilates program before attending to group and unsupervised sessions. A real-time ultrasound assessment is usually performed to facilitate activity of the appropriate core stabilising muscles. Clients often require several one on one sessions with a Physiotherapist to develop confidence and good core stability. All of our Physiotherapists are qualified in Pilates instruction and several have completed Polestar and DMA education programs.

Supervised Equipment Based Class Sessions

These classes entail small groups of 4-6 clients supervised by a Physiotherapist. Each client attends with their own tailored Pilates program. These classes provide the ideal environment for progression of equipment based Pilates programs and enable supervision of clients without the expense of a one on one consultation.

Unsupervised Sessions

Clients can book unsupervised session times to undertake their individual program in the Pilates gym. To prevent over-crowding, no more than 3 clients are permitted to attend the gym at one time. Mat-work Classes

One initial individual assessment with a Physiotherapist is required prior to commencement of these classes. The classes are aimed at those who wish to undertake mat (floor) based Pilates instruction within a group format. Classes are instructed and supervised by a qualified Physiotherapist who has received extra training in the Pilates method of exercise.

Our aim is to keep these groups small to allow for individual instruction if required – therefore no more than 12 participants are booked into each class. Classes are tiered to cater for those with basic knowledge and ability (Level 1) to those wanting progression and more advanced instruction (Level 2). An advanced (Level 3) course is also offered and has been tailored to meet the increased strength demands of athletes.

Additional Information

  • A medical referral is not necessary although it is recommended that clients wishing to join classes are enjoying reasonable health and have the ability to get up and down from the floor. It is not appropriate to attend if you have an acute injury, but your physiotherapist can advise you in this regard.
  • Health fund rebates are available for all appointments, class formats and unsupervised sessions. Claims can be processed on the day via our HICAPS facility. Please see our reception staff for a fee schedule.
  • Mat-work classes are payable up front in a group of 3 for $18.00 per class or $20.00 per casual class.
  • Reimbursement from private health insurance funds is available via the HiCaps system. Please see our receptionists for class times and availability.
  • Bookings are essential.
